The Art of Growing and Showing Melons.

Melons.

Melon Growing is one of the easiest of all fruits to grow in a warm sunny Greenhouse, but there is a critical time in their growing life that will irritate even the most astute of Melon Growers. The critical time comes just when the Melon fruits begin to swell and ripen, for unless the cultivation has been correct the Melon plants are liable to collapse, then woe betide the Melon fruits.

The bane of the melon grower is that the stems may be attacked by a disease called Melon canker, this disease is very rare nowadays, so try not to be to alarmed. With modern F1 hybrid Melon seed these Melon diseases have been filtered out.
The F1 hybrid Melon seed will germinate readily in warmth, and the Melon fruits may be expected to be ripe in about three months after sowing the melon seeds.

The orthodox method is to sow one melon seed in a small pot in a Greenhouse that has a minimum temperature of 13 to 15 degree Celsius, covering with a piece of glass or a polythene lid and shading from sunshine. The Melon seedlings will show in about 10-14 days, then the little melon plants need all the sunshine they can get.

Melons may either be grown in large pots, 10 litre is the size we use, or they can be planted directly into a well prepared Melon bed in the greenhouse.

The best Melon Varieties we can recommend are any of the Melon Galia, these varieties are very resistant to all Melon mildew and Melon Fusarium pathogens. If you require a Melon which is not Quite so large the Charantais Melon varieties suite this niche very well.

One of the most important points the Melon grower has to bear in mind is not to pour water near the stem of the plant, this could lead to the plant collapsing due to any diseases at ground level.
When the Melon plants are well rooted and growing freely the compost must be kept moist. When the melon fruits are ripening less water is needed at root level, it is advisable to wet down the greenhouse paths, the drier atmosphere is necessary for the fruit to ripen.
